The idea is that during the day, the road markings absorb light and then at night keep glowing, which sounds like an excellent idea. However, it seems they don't shine so well during wet conditions... which also happens to be the time you need those road markings the most.
The company also has plans to paint warning signs onto the road that only show under certain weather conditions. For example, if the temperature falls below a certain temperature, the symbol of an ice crystal would show on the road indicating the potential for ice. Of course those signs would only be visible at night...
If there really is a need to warn motorists of bad conditions, surely there are more reliable methods that can be used?
The markings have ‘faded out’ and have been found to be highly sensitive to large amounts of moisture – which could prove a frequent problem in rainy northern Europe.
