Google released a video a couple of days ago about the progress they've made on their self-driving car project. Predictably, this was followed by numerous articles and blog posts all over the internet about how amazingly awesome the technology is.
Whilst Google's cars are extremely impressive (although their affordability is questionable), I think the more important part of this is the publicity. As with any new technology, especially one that seems so foreign, the hardest part of driving adoption is getting people used to the idea of autonomous cars, and convincing people that the cars can be safe. The amount of positive publicity Google is able to generate is incredible, and is going a long way to normalising self-driving cars in the minds of normal people.
