Pure genius - a laser that can shoot down mosquitos in mid-flight as they annoyingly buzz around your head! Apparently the lasers in DVD drives are good enough to kill a mosquito, meaning this could be an awesome DIY electronics project. It seems a camera and some other sensors is being used to identify and track the mosquitos before aiming and firing the laser. There's a TED video out as well.
Using widely available and common electronics parts, Intellectual Ventures has made lasers which can kill mosquitoes mid-flight -- at a rate of about 50 to 100 per second.
