An aptly named company, Purism, has just crowdfunded the Librem 15 - a computer sold with all of its software open source (including the hardware drivers, and maybe one day the BIOS and firmware too). CraigCruden sums it up well: "I don't want to buy hardware from someone that has no ear to listen to his customers if it violates his own orthodox religion. I do not want to be herded into a Linux ghetto. I still want to run whatever I want on my laptop (assuming my next purchase is a Macbook pro - broadwell) but it applies equally well to those that run Windows in addition to Linux."
The operating system (a variant of Trisquel GNU/Linux), hardware drivers and included apps are all free and open -- Purism is even trying to loosen up the BIOS and firmware.
