100 million years before the 1960s, sauropod dinosaurs were probably eating a species of psychedelic black fungus that was a precursor to LSD. We know, at least, that the psychedelic ergot coexisted with dinosaurs in present-day Myanmar: Scientists found a fossil of this fungus in amber (leading many* to imagine a weird new version of Jurassic Park crossed with Alice in Wonderland, where scientists clone this hallucinogenic fungus and dinosaurs at the same time.)

Would dinosaurs experience the same sorts of reactions that humans do to psychedelic drugs? It is difficult to say. But it is possible that the K-T extinction wiped out not only an entire range of fauna, but also their creative, LSD-fueled art projects and musical ventures.

Sue in the Sky With Diamonds, anyone?

* ok, maybe just me
