The full genome of the woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) has now been sequenced. I find this really interesting, especially looking at how the genetic code differs from that of modern elephants. However, I think aiming to recreate a living mammoth is a step too far. They would not necessarily be adapted for today’s climate and habitats, and it would be unethical to breed them just to live in zoos. Of course this is still completely hypothetical; the task of ‘de-extincting’ the mammoth would extremely challenging.
